SVA Architects recently partnered with General Contracting firm “J.H. Fitzmaurice” to build a much
needed solution to affordable housing for teachers and other faculty of the Jefferson Union High School District (“JUHSD”).
Many teachers who are starting out, garner lower salaries, a separate issue for us to visit as a community. They and others often find it difficult to find affordable housing in the district they work in, creating other issues like commuting. “JUHSD” is one of the first to pass a bond exclusively to build an affordable housing community for teachers and staff.
Units ranging from 560 square feet to 1,174 square feet, featuring one, two and three bedroom options, became available with the Grand Opening of “705 Serramonte”. The homes, featuring newer design and creature comforts, such as stainless steel appliances, vinyl plank flooring and larger windows, providing wonderful light, debuted at 50% of the market rate. Community amenities include BBQ’s, a play structure for children, along with a meeting space for gatherings.
There were other firms involved in the effort, including Seidel Architects and BDE Architecture.
A wonderful achievement for all involved, that can surely be a model for other cities and School Districts, not to mention other areas where affordable housing is sorely needed.
